Servette Serve Up A Treat

Ormer FC kicked off the Southampton Cup against the professional Swiss outfit Servette FC. On a beautiful Sunday morning at the impressive Southampton training ground the Ormers took to the field against physically imposing opposition.

The game started at a frenetic pace with both sets of players trying to close down the opposition and look to capitalise on defensive errors. The Ormers looked to take the game to the opposition from the off and fashioned the first chance within the opening minute. A slick passing move through the Ormer midfield released Alex Scott on the left hand side of the Servette penalty who mashed a first time effort which unfortunately cannoned off an Ormer player and looped into the arms of the Servette keeper.

It was abundantly clear that the Sevette team possessed a number of talented players who fizzed the ball around the midfield looking to exploit a weakness in the Ormer back line. From one of these moves a Servette striker looked to have created an opportunity but was thwarted by a scampering cover tackle by Harry Tough. From the resulting corner Servete almost snatched the lead as the towering central defender claimed first run on his marker and sent a header arrowing clear of Hamon’s cross bar.

Servette finally broke the deadlock on 17 minutes. Once again Servette were on the attack as a cross was whipped in to the area from the overlapping full-back. Le Page was first to the ball and made a looping clearance 25 yards from goal, unfortunately in defensive partners reacted slowly to the situation and allowed a Servette player the opportunity to strike at goal. The ball was beautifully struck with the outside of the right foot and fizzed past the helpless Hamon into the right hand corner.

The game continued in the same manner with Servette enjoying plenty of the ball but being unable to break down the defensive cover of the Ormers. As half time approached it looked as if the Ormer would get to half-time with a single goal deficit. However Servette had other ideas and snatched a second goal just before the break. Once again a raid down the right hand side of the pitch resulted in a cross to the far post, a quick one-two and a swivelled finish.

The second goal was a little harsh on the Ormers who now faced a mountain to climb in the second half. To compound matters the Ormers contributed to their own downfall early in the second half. A routine save from Hamon and an early release to the feet of Tough saw the rangy Ormer defender set off on a mazy dribble. Unfortunately a quick thinking Servette player whipped the ball off the defenders toe and punished the Ormer back line with a decisive finish. At 3-0 down the Ormers could have capitulated in the final 20 minutes, but much to their credit they began to take the game to the Swiss team.

The feathers of the Swiss outfit were now being ruffled as the Ormers harried their opposition into mistakes culminating in a number of chances in front of goal. However it was from a slick series of passes between Adams, Roussel and Le Page which saw Scott released on the edge of the area. His bending finish to the far corner was superbly saved by the Servette keeper. Unfortunately for him Brandon Wallace was the quickest thinking player in the penalty area and he seized on the follow up to reduce the deficit.

Within minutes the Ormers were in full flow again. This time Adams was released from the centre of midfield. His surging run was met by the on rushing goal keeper who made a block outside the penalty area. A clear case of hand ball was not punished by the referee, much to the bemusement of the Ormers. In a pulsating encounter it was Servette who created the final chance of the match as a surging run from the left back resulted in a stunning strike on the Ormer goal. However Haon was more than equal to the task, pulling off wonderful finger-tip save.

Next up for the Ormers is a vital clash against the hosts Southampton who crashed to an opening day 8-1 defeat against Dinamo Zagreb.
