Ormer FC Introduce New Ladies Team

From a global perspective women’s football has made huge strides in recent years. One can point to a number of success stories, including, the national women’s team success at the recent world cup, the development of the women’s premier league and most recently the emergence of Maya Le Tissier as a role model for any aspiring player. Sadly for the women’s game, the rude health enjoyed off island has not been replicated in Guernsey. At a senior level participation levels have dramatically reduced, culminating in the collapse of the local women’s league.

However Ormer FC and a number of the senior island women’s team have decided to give women’s football a new direction in Guernsey. Despite being a relatively new club, Ormer FC have decided to expand their operation to include not only youth football but also include a senior women’s team. The direction of this new team will closely follow the model of the youth team and be affiliated to the Hampshire FA and look to play all of their games in the UK.

Chairman of Ormer FC, Wayne Du Port, said “The intention at this stage is for the ladies to establish the squad and look to play a series of friendlies in the first season against UK opposition. This will allow the team to gauge the level of competition and locate an appropriate league for the following season. To supplement the experience we will also look to enter the Hampshire Cup and competitive tournaments this season”.

Training has already started for the new season and will continue twice a week throughout the summer at Ormer FC’s home ground The KGV. Founder member, Vicky Rang said, “I am absolutely delighted to see so many players here for the first training session”. The coaching team responsible for the development of the Ormer Ladies will be the hugely experienced Jose Alvarez, Martyn de Garis and Brian Horsepool
